Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Services

ADHD assessments involve a 3-hour assessment. This can either be structured as an initial 1 hour and subsequent 2 hours or a single 3-hour appointment. These 3 hours include a general mental health assessment, an interview using a structured clinical tool, and initial discussions around diagnosis and treatment options. You will receive a diagnostic report as part of this service.

Presently Dr Soumitra Burman-Roy, Dr Caryl Marshall, Dr Dorothea Bindman, Dr Simone Ciufolini, Dr Zain Sadiq, Dr Bhathika Perera, Dr Isabel McMullen and Dr Ilaria Bonoldi complete ADD / ADHD assessments.

All of our assessing clinicians are general or neurodevelopmental psychiatrists with deep expertise in ADHD.  They are therefore well equipped to approach diagnosis in a broad and holistic manner, considering your general mental health. This allows them to support you with any challenges related to mental health which may exist in lieu of, or in addition to, ADHD.

An ADD / ADHD assessment costs £1560 for the full assessment (comprising three hours of consultation, and a diagnostic report provided) with future 30-minute follow-ups priced at the clinicians standard follow-up fees.

For those who have already received an ADHD diagnosis, this service includes a 1.5 hour general mental health assessment, a review of your ADHD symptoms and their impact on your life, and the formulation of a treatment plan. The assessment includes a history of current issues, past psychiatric history, personal history, medical history, drug and alcohol history, family history, history of ADHD symptoms and diagnosis. When forming a treatment plan, previous treatments and ADHD assessment report will be reviewed.

Presently Dr Soumitra Burman-Roy, Dr Caryl Marshall, Dr Ilaria Bonoldi, Dr Chun Chiang Sin Fai Lam, Dr Dorothea Bindman, Dr Zain Sadiq, Dr Simone Ciufolini, Dr Isabel McMullen, Dr Bhathika Perera and Dr Marilia Calcia can provide continuation of care services for those with a pre-existing ADD / ADHD diagnosis

All of our continuation of care clinicians are general or neurodevelopmental psychiatrists with deep expertise in ADHD.  They are therefore well equipped to approach diagnosis in a broad and holistic manner, considering your general mental health. This allows them supporting you with any challenges related to mental health which may exist in lieu of, or in addition to, ADHD.

The cost for a continuation of care plan for those already diagnosed with Adult ADD or ADHD is £805, and includes a 1.5h assessment and a thorough care plan.

This assessment is 6 hours long in total and is split into two 3-hour appointments and then you will need at least one 30 minute follow up appointment. This includes a general mental health assessment and an interview using a structured clinical tool for ADHD in one appointment and ASD in the second.

Presently Dr Caryl Marshall can complete Combined Adult ADHD and ASD assessments.

The cost for the full Combined Adult ADHD and ASD assessment is £2,745 and 30 minute follow up appointments are charged at £245.

Our psychologists with specialism in ADHD will be able to provide support for exploring the effects of ADHD on your life, both longitudinally and presently, along with helping you embrace your ADHD / ADD to build on your inherent skills and confidence, whilst at the same time address specific difficulties that you may have as a result.

The latter may include dealing with procrastination, regulating impulsivity, addictions, regulating mood swings, reviewing organisational skills and time awareness, enhancing study skills, anger management, sleep issues, and habit formation.

We are also able to offer general psychological therapy with a neurodivergent angle for most mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar affective disorder, etc.

We are also able to offer family or couple’s therapy, either as a one off or more regularly in the context of your ADHD.

Presently Dr Maria Jalmbrant and Ms Jessica Roberts offer psychological therapy in the context of Adult ADD / ADHD..

Our ADD / ADHD sub-specialist psychologists are also very experienced General Adult psychologists. They are therefore well equipped to approach your situation in a broad and holistic manner, considering your general mental health. This allows them supporting you with any challenges related to mental health which may exist in lieu of, or in addition to, ADHD.

Each one hour psychology session costs between £200 - £250, depending on clinician. Please note, fees are not based on clinical expertise or experience and each sets their own private practice fees.

Whilst an overall time period for psychological work is difficult to quantify, we often find that patients remain engaged for between 6 months and 2 years.

It is sometimes the case that people with ADHD have problems managing their alcohol and/or recreational drug use.  For example, some autistic people use alcohol as a way of managing social anxiety and sensory overstimulation and people with ADHD may use stimulants as self-medication and alcohol to reduce internal restlessness/busy thoughts as well as manage social anxiety.  Despite starting out as something you are doing to help yourself, over time the substance use can make it more difficult to cope.

If this resonates with you, you may benefit from seeing Dr Nicky Kalk for a consultation in addition to your main psychiatrist to explore your substance use, try to understand it in relation to your neurodiversity, and ensure that prescribing choices are safe and appropriate for this comorbidity. These appointments will last 60 minutes during which you will have an opportunity to discuss the role that substances play in your life; explore the pros and cons of substance use; think about any goals you have to change your substance use in order to improve your health and well-being.; and explore possible avenues of support.

Presently Dr Nicky Kalk can provide Substance Misuse consultations and continuation of care services for those with a pre-existing ADD / ADHD diagnosis

Dr Kalk offers initial consultations of an hour, with follow up appointments of 30-minutes.

A one-hour appointment costs £445 and a 30-minute follow up costs £245.

Can I have an online consultation?

In general, Dr Kalk prefers to do assessments around substance use face to face as it enables a more accurate clinical evaluation of substance use

Do you have any exclusions?

It may be the case that you are suffering from a severe substance use disorder requiring in-patient treatment for detoxification, for example.  If this is the case, it would be more appropriate to seek help from a service with in-patient beds as Sloane Court Clinic is out-patient based.

Please note; Sloane Court Clinic does not prescribe maintenance opioid agonist treatment. 

Many of those who have received a diagnosis for ADHD are keen to take medication to manage their symptoms. In instances where patients are either already taking many medications or take medication with known interactions, careful consideration needs to be taken when choosing an ADHD medication.

Medication prescribed during pregnancy also requires thorough review. In cases like these we recommend a consultation with our Consultant Pharmacist as she can advise as to the best treatment options tailored to you.

Additionally, many people wish to simply know more about the medications - and our Consultant Pharmacist can meet with you to discuss ADHD medication in general, and can provide an educational, and helpful, overview.

Presently Dr Siobhan Gee can provide Adjunct Complex Pharmacology Consultation consultations and continuation of care services for those with a pre-existing ADD / ADHD diagnosis. We would ask that any referrals to Dr Gee are discussed, and made, by your existing clinician.

Dr Gee offers consultations of an hour, or 30-minutes.

A one-hour appointment costs £400 and a 30-minute appointment costs £200.

It is possible to struggle with focus, concentration or prioritising daily activities, without necessarily having other symptoms suggestive of ADHD. This can leave people feeling unsure on next steps as these difficulties have a tangible impact on daily life, but there is neither a clear diagnosis nor, more importantly, a clear treatment pathway. 

In these situations, it is helpful to undergo a general psychiatric assessment to gain a clear picture on your mental health and rule out any other psychiatric disorders that may be contributing to the presenting difficulties. This is especially the case if you have never seen a psychiatrist before. Our psychiatrists adopt a diagnostic approach that combines the use of screening tools, collecting collateral information from authorised family or friends and in some cases, neurological testing.

Following this, one of our specialists will be able to suggest strategies to improve focus, concentration or task management that is tailored to the individual's needs and demands of daily life. This referral may be to a psychiatrist or psychologist with the frequency of follow-ups to be decided between you and your clinician.

Potential Differential diagnoses that may result in symptoms of ADHD include:

Anxiety Disorders

• Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive worry and difficulty concentrating due to anxiety can resemble ADHD-related inattention.
• Panic Disorder: Episodes of intense fear and difficulty focusing may mimic ADHD, especially during acute anxiety or panic attacks.
• Social Anxiety Disorder: Avoidance and social withdrawal can result in apparent inattention or disorganization.

Adjustment Disorders

• Behaviours and difficulties commonly associated with ADHD are widely present among people and might become more apparent in a period of stress. Perhaps something has recently changed in your life and there is the need to implement some strategies to help you cope with this.

Depressive Disorders

• Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Poor concentration, forgetfulness, and fatigue in depression can be mistaken for ADHD symptoms.
• Dysthymia (Persistent Depressive Disorder): Chronic low mood and lack of energy can mimic the inattentiveness of ADHD.

Bipolar Disorder

• Bipolar I and II Disorders: Manic or hypomanic episodes with impulsivity, distractibility, and hyperactivity can look like ADHD. Distinguishing between mania/hypomania and ADHD hyperactivity is essential.

Substance Use Disorders

• Stimulant Misuse: Substance use, particularly of stimulants like caffeine, cocaine, or amphetamines, can lead to symptoms that resemble hyperactivity and impulsivity.
• Alcohol and Drug Withdrawal: Withdrawal from substances can cause cognitive impairment, irritability, and attention problems that may mimic ADHD.

Personality Disorders

• Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): Impulsivity, mood instability, and difficulty maintaining relationships in BPD can overlap with symptoms of ADHD.
• Antisocial Personality Disorder: Impulsivity and disregard for social rules may resemble ADHD behaviour, but the underlying causes are distinct.

Learning Disorders

• Specific Learning Disorder (e.g., dyslexia): Cognitive difficulties related to processing information can lead to inattention or poor academic performance, often confused with ADHD.

Sleep Disorders

• Sleep Apnoea: Chronic sleep deprivation from sleep disorders can cause attention and concentration problems that resemble ADHD.
• Insomnia: Difficulty sleeping can result in daytime fatigue and attention deficits that mimic ADHD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

• In adults with high-functioning autism, symptoms such as social difficulties, executive function challenges, and repetitive behaviours can overlap with ADHD, though the two conditions have different root causes.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

• Hypervigilance, difficulty concentrating, and impulsivity in PTSD can be misinterpreted as ADHD symptoms. The underlying cause in PTSD is trauma, while in ADHD, it is neurodevelopmental.

Thyroid Disorders 

• Hyperthyroidism: Increased energy, restlessness, and irritability due to thyroid dysfunction may appear similar to ADHD-related hyperactivity.
• Hypothyroidism: Cognitive slowing, fatigue, and inattention can resemble ADHD-related inattention.

Cognitive Impairment/Neurocognitive Disorders

• Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI): Early signs of cognitive decline (often seen in older adults) can include forgetfulness and inattention that mimic ADHD.
• Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Cognitive deficits following brain injury can lead to impulsivity and inattention, resembling ADHD.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

• While typically associated with compulsions and obsessions, the rigidity and difficulty shifting attention in OCD can sometimes resemble ADHD, particularly with difficulties in task completion.

Normal Variability and Life Stress

• Stress, multitasking, and general life overwhelm can lead to forgetfulness, distractibility, and impulsivity, which might be confused with ADHD, particularly in high-pressure environments.

Psychotic Disorders

• Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder can present with disorganized thinking and behaviour, sometimes mimicking ADHD, especially if these symptoms are subtle or are part of the prodromal phase.

Medical Conditions Affecting the Brain

• Neurological Disorders: Conditions like multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, or epilepsy can lead to cognitive impairments, inattention, and executive dysfunction that might resemble ADHD.

The cost for a 50-60 minute initial appointment with a Consultant Psychiatrist ranges from £395 - £530.
