Dr Caryl Marshall

Dr Caryl Marshall is a consultant psychiatrist currently working in South West London and St Georges Mental Health Trust. She is a specialist in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID), autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dr Marshall is additionally skilled in the treatment and management of complex and chronic mental health illness in general adult populations. She has medico-legal experience, completing assessments and reports relating to adults with neurodevelopmental disorders in criminal, civil and court of protection cases. She has extensive experience in the assessment of capacity in adults with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr Marshall has worked in the field of intellectual disabilities and autism for over 20 years; prior to a career in medicine and psychiatry she managed community-based services for people with complex and severe neurodevelopmental disorders, providing her with a uniquely perspective regarding the individuals she supports.

Dr Marshall completed training in intellectual disability psychiatry at the Maudsley training scheme. She has worked in secondary and, specialist, tertiary NHS mental health roles in South London and the Maudsley and Oxleas NHS Foundation Trusts, including the National Autism Unit, Adult ADHD clinic, forensic neurodevelopmental services and community intellectual disability and high support rehabilitation teams. Dr Marshall is currently a consultant psychiatrist in the Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust Mental Health Hub providing assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults with diverse mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions, including ASD and adult ADHD. She is an educational and clinical supervisor for trainee psychiatrists and medical students and lectures as the module lead on the MSc Basic Mental Health Course at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.

Dr Marshall has written book chapters relating to neurodevelopmental disorders and the forensic settings; her research interests include rare disorders in adults with intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder.
