Dr Ilaria Bonoldi is a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS, and an honorary Clinical Research Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), King’s College London and University of Pavia, Italy. In the NHS, she works as a Consultant at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for TREAT (Treatment REview and Assessment Team). She is a general adult psychiatrist and runs a specialist service for patients with difficult to manage symptoms and side-effects from treatment, complex physical comorbidities, and treatment resistant psychosis. She has also worked for five years with young patients with emerging mental disorders, in the community. She led the set-up of the early detection for psychosis team in Croydon and Lewisham.
Dr Bonoldi trained in psychiatry at the University of Pavia, in Italy. During her training she spent one year at the Department of Psychosis Studies at the IoPPN, King’s College London. After obtaining the Italian equivalent of the English CCT (higher training specialisation) in General Adult Psychiatry, Dr Bonoldi completed a PhD in collaboration with the University of Pavia and then was appointed again into a clinical research position at the IoPPN, where she had the opportunity to combine her research and clinical interests in the early detection and treatment of major mental disorders in young people.
Dr Bonoldi is fascinated by the different perspectives of her profession, ranging from neurobiological mechanisms to subjective or philosophical aspects of psychiatry and participatory research with her patients. At the IoPPN she has completed international studies that employ modern neuroscience to investigate neurobiological factors underlying the onset of mental disorders in young people. She has also a strong interest in psychopathology and phenomenology, and she has contributed to the Oxford Handbook of Phenomenological Psychopathology.
Dr. Bonoldi has so far published fifty seven scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, including several with high impact factors. She has presented her work at numerous international conferences worldwide. In 2019 she has been listed in the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers database, “recognizing the world's most influential researchers of the past decade, demonstrated by the production of multiple highly-cited papers that rank in the top 1%.”
She has been teaching for the Mental Health Study Program at the IoPPN, King’s College London, and currently she is a teacher for the psychopathology module of the Maudsley Training Programme / IoPPN MRCPsych Course and for the master’s degree (MSc) in “Psychology, Neuroscience and Human Sciences”, University of Pavia, Italy.
In her everyday clinical psychiatric practice, Dr Bonoldi is skilled in the management of a broad range of psychiatric problems, both minor and severe. In addition to her availability to assess and manage everyday psychological problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression, she is especially experienced in the assessment, early detection and management of a variety of emerging psychiatric disorders, including ADHD. She offers detailed clinical assessments, early differential diagnosis, care plans and problem-solving approach for young adults with subtle distressing symptoms that may reflect an increased vulnerability to develop psychiatric disorders. Moreover, she offers specialistic treatment reviews, advises and management for patients with major mental disorders, side effects from medication and physical comorbidities. Dr Bonoldi is also specifically working in our Adult ADHD assessment team, offering state-of-the art diagnostic assessment and treatment for this condition.
Dr Bonoldi is available to work both in English and Italian.
