Dr Sharon Chambers is a Counselling Psychologist (HCPC registered) and chartered member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and has worked across a wide range of NHS community, outpatient and inpatient settings. She completed doctoral clinical training at the University of Surrey, and CBT training at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN) at Kings College London.
Dr Chambers is an anxiety disorders specialist currently employed at the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma (CADAT) at the Maudsley Hospital, South London & Maudsley NHS Trust; CADAT is a leader in research, training and the clinical treatment of anxiety and cognitive behaviour therapy in the UK. She works as part of the CADAT Perinatal Team (CADAT-PAX) assessing and treating anxiety disorders during pregnancy and the post-natal period, and parents with children up to 3 years old. She is also a clinical-trial therapist on the Adept Research Trial at CADAT and KCL working with pregnant women with anxiety disorders. At CADAT, she sees local referrals and national referrals from across the UK for anxiety disorders, including for birth-related PTSD, fear of childbirth/ tokophobia, maternal OCD, health anxiety by proxy (parental anxiety about their child’s health), maternal generalised anxiety and panic. Dr Chambers previously worked at CADAT’s Outreach Trauma Service, commissioned by NHS England assessing and treating UK people suffering with PTSD from recent terrorist attacks, and where she also provided clinical supervision to other treating psychologists around the UK.
Dr Chambers was previously a senior counselling psychologist in IAPT for ten years, where she was both the perinatal lead and a team leader, and also co-led on long-term physical health conditions and mindfulness groups, and provided couple’s therapy. As part of a Maudsley project, she also provided support to the Ebola Crises humanitarian workers. As a qualified psychologist she has also previously worked in a secondary care Older Adults CMHT, and with older adult army veterans with PTSD. In the NHS, she has been a NHS clinical supervisor for psychologists and trainees for 15 years, and has taught on clinical training courses at London universities (KCL & UCL).
Dr Chambers is trained in a range of psychotherapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (BABCP accredited) and Eye Movement, Desensitisation & Re-Processing Therapy (EMDR) for PTSD, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), and Behavioural Couples Therapy (BCT).
She also uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Dr Chambers’ earlier experience includes working as a Registered General Nurse in an intensive care unit, cardiac, gastro-enterology, respiratory, gynaecology and obstetrics, and then as a Registered Health Visitor working with perinatal women and parents with babies / young children, for 20 years.
