Dr Simon Wilson

Dr Simon Wilson

Dr Simon Wilson is a consultant psychiatrist, with a portfolio career. He studied medicine at the University of Leeds, and also obtained degrees in philosophy and chemical pathology during his time in Leeds. He trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, specialising in forensic psychiatry, and subsequently spent 11 years as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS working at Brixton prison, the Maudsley Hospital, and at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. He was a trainer of junior psychiatrists throughout this time.

In addition to his practice at the Sloane Court Clinic, Dr Wilson is the Clinical Director at The Big White Wall, an innovative and award-winning online mental health service. He is also an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the North London Forensic Service, working in the field of public figure threat assessment, and an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Forensic and Neurodevelopmental Science at the Institute of Psychiatry. He organises the department’s academic programme, teaches on a variety of postgraduate courses at the Institute of Psychiatry, and founded an MSc module on prison psychiatry. He has academic interests in medico-legal, ethical, and philosophical aspects of psychiatry, stalking, fixation, public figure threat assessment, and online mental health.

He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology, and prior to that was the Associate Editor for eight years. He has co-edited the UK’s only textbook of prison psychiatry (Wilson S & Cumming I (eds. 2010) Psychiatry in Prisons. A comprehensive handbook, London, Jessica Kingsley), and has published over 50 journal articles, research letters, and book chapters in the field of psychiatry.

Dr Wilson is skilled in the assessment and management of both minor and severe mental illness, including mood and anxiety disorders, adjustment reactions, and psychotic illnesses. He is experienced in the assessment and management of a variety of problematic and challenging behaviours, including anger, abnormal jealousy, stalking, personality disorder, and impulse control disorders. He is experienced in medico-legal work and is a Member of the Society of Expert Witnesses.
