Dr Ronan McIvor

Dr Ronan McIvor

Dr Ronan McIvor is a senior consultant psychiatrist with over 25 years’ experience in the assessment and treatment of mental health problems. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2011. An Honorary Senior Lecturer at Guys, Kings and St Thomas' School of Medicine and a Visiting Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, reflect his ongoing interest in teaching and research.

Dr McIvor read medicine and completed his medical and pre-membership training in Dublin, Ireland. In London, he carried out research at UCL and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. He completed his clinical training at the world famous Maudsley Hospital, where he was appointed consultant in 1999. During his senior training, he worked at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, specialising in neuropsychiatry. He is experienced in treating a wide range of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, psychosis and personality issues. While at Queen Square, he gained expertise in the assessment and management of patients presenting with chronic fatigue, medically unexplained symptoms and conversion disorders.

Dr McIvor has a special interest in the assessment and treatment of stress related problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder, having worked at the Maudsley’s Traumatic Stress Service for 8 years. He continues to work as a consultant at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in the assessment and treatment of patients with complex needs within a forensic inpatient setting.

Dr McIvor is an enthusiastic teacher. He is Firm Head to medical students studying psychiatry and neurology at Kings, which involves planning and delivering innovative teaching programmes. He acts as an examiner to final year medical students. Dr McIvor is an Educational Supervisor and trainer to junior psychiatrists and provides lectures and tutorials to a range of professionals, both nationally and internationally. He has an interest in overseas development, and acts as an examiner and trainer at the University of Hargeisa in Somaliland. As a reflection of his innovation in the development and delivery of clinical services and care, he was awarded 8 Clinical Excellence Awards by his NHS Trust, most recently in 2015.

Dr McIvor has engaged in research throughout his career, with over 50 publications in national and international medical journals. His research focuses on evaluating patients’ experiences within mental health services, biological mechanisms in triggering severe mental illness and the impact of stress on psychological wellbeing. Recent research included the prevalence and impact of stalking on victims, clozapine induced myoclonus and the development of a novel prison in-reach service in Somaliland.

Dr McIvor has worked in private practice over many years, with attachments at the Priory and Cygnet Hospitals. He is experienced in medico-legal work and providing evidence in court.
