Dr Neil Hammond

Dr Neil Hammond BSc, DClinPsy, Clinpsychol, AFBPS is the Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s National Adult Autism Spectrum Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Services. He is HCPC registered and a fellow of the British Psychological Society. Dr Hammond currently specialises in working with adults with Autism and/or ADHD with co morbid mental health difficulties.

Dr Hammond works with adults with a diverse range of mental health difficulties including anxiety, social anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, eating disorders, developmental disorders (e.g. autism, ADHD/ADD), procrastination, time management and organizational difficulties, perfectionism, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD), relationship difficulties, personality disorders, self-harm, body-dysmorphic disorder and body image problems, Tourette’s Syndrome, bi-polar affective disorders, PTSD, adjustment difficulties, veterans, combat stress, addiction, anger and aggression.

Dr Hammond has worked in lifespan mental health services in the NHS for over 20 years, during which time he has received specialist post-doctoral specialist CBT training at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Kings College London (IOPPN). Since this time he has developed CBT based interventions for adults with autism and/or ADHD. Dr Hammond is also a British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) supervisor, a Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) teacher and has completed accredited EMDR training. He is also proficient in the use of schema-focused therapy, cognitive analytic therapy, brief solution-focused therapy, compassionate CBT. Dr Hammond can also provide specialist diagnostic assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorders for men and women, neuropsychological assessments of specific and general learning difficulties and to clarify the clinical presentation of cognitive difficulties where indicated.

Teaching & Research

Dr Hammond current teaches CBT for complex mental health difficulties across the lifespan at the IOPPN, Royal Holloway University of London and Canterbury and Christchurch University. He also provides regular presentations on the novel uses of CBT in lifespan neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health at national conferences for the National Autistic Society. Dr Hammond contributes to a national training programme run by the Royal College of Psychiatrists to train psychiatrists in the diagnosis and support of adults with autistic spectrum disorders. He has also recently has led the teaching programme for CBT for adults on the autism spectrum for NHS Scotland.

Dr Hammond’s current research interests include developing psychological interventions for adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD as well as developing individual and group CBT interventions alongside social skills and a Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). He also has an interest in the use of technology such as the use of computer/app based CBT and feedback systems to assist in the delivery of evidence based interventions.
