Dr Ilaria Bonoldi is a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS, and an honorary clinical research fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. In the NHS she works as a Consultant at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust for TREAT (Treatment REview and Assessment Team), She is a general adult psychiatrist and runs a specialist service for patients with difficult to manage symptoms and side-effects from treatment, complex physical comorbidities and treatment resistant psychosis. She has also worked for five years with patients with emerging psychosis, in the community. She led the set up of the early detection for psychosis team in Croydon and Lewisham.

Dr Bonoldi trained in psychiatry at the University of Pavia, in Italy. During her training she spent one year at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, as a visiting clinical researcher, to develop her skills in the early detection of psychosis. After obtaining the Italian equivalent of the English CCT (higher training specialisation) in General Adult Psychiatry, Dr Bonoldi was appointed again into a clinical research position at the Institute of Psychiatry, Department of Psychosis Studies, where she had the opportunity to combine her research and clinical interests in the early detection and treatment of major mental illnesses.

Dr Bonoldi is fascinated by the different perspectives of her profession, ranging from neurobiological mechanisms to subjective or philosophical aspects of psychiatry. As Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Psychosis Studies at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience she run a multicentre study that employs modern neuroscience to investigate neurobiological factors underlying the onset of psychosis. She has also a strong interest in phenomenology and she has obtained her PhD conducting her own study to investigate the interface between neurobiology and phenomenology. She actively contributes to the department’s academic programme and she has so far published thirty original papers in peer-reviewed journals, including several with high impact factors. She has presented her work in several international conferences worldwide.

She has been teaching for the Mental Health Study Program at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College of London, and currently she teaches part of the psychopathology module of the Maudsley Training Programme/IoPPN MRCPsych Course.

In her everyday clinical psychiatric practice Dr Bonoldi is skilled in the management of a broad range of psychiatric problems, both minor and severe. In addition to her availability to assess and manage everyday psychological problems such as stress, anxiety and depression, she is especially experienced in the assessment, early detection and management of a variety of emerging psychiatric disorders, particularly psychosis. She offers detailed clinical assessments, early differential diagnosis, care plans and problem solving approach for young adults with subtle distressing symptoms that may reflect an increased vulnerability to develop psychiatric disorders. Moreover, she offers treatment reviews, advises and management for patients with ongoing symptoms, side effects and physical comorbidities.

Dr Bonoldi is available to work both in English and Italian.
